The importance of good space planning and design:
At DMA, we strongly believe that “it doesn’t matter how pretty a room is if it doesn’t function well”. Meaning, the design intent behind the space must be thought out well beyond the aesthetic measures. A well-designed space promotes good circulation throughout, and ample accessibility for all of its occupants.
Things to consider:
What is the purpose of the space? Who will be using it? How many people does it need to accommodate? What about versatility –does it need to be multifunctional? Will there be children or pets in the space? Is durability a concern? Are we designing for personal use and enjoyment, or for investment? The list goes on.
Most people think designers come at the end of the project after all construction is done, and they simply come in to “decorate” or furnish the space. This isn’t always true. In fact, most of the best designed spaces have the interior designer on the project well before demolition begins. This way, the client can move forward with the project with the finished goal in mind, and without missing any details (like where outlets need to go or where electrical/plumbing needs to be, so that furnishings can be placed appropriately). Things are much more costly and complicated to remedy after the fact. So, why not do it properly from the beginning?
My role:
I spend a great deal of time getting to know my clients so that I can best design the space for them. Design is personal, and design is intentional. The goal is to improve the use of a space, while enjoying the details that were specifically curated for them. With the client in mind, the final product is completely customized to fit their needs, and that is precisely how you turn a house into a home.
